Labor Procedures That May Affect Breastfeeding

One is the C-section, which is becoming very popular in many hospitals nowadays. Why? Because it’s the most convenient! But convenience doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. C-sections are still unnatural and they strip the opportunities for you and your baby to trigger the needed biological processes for breastfeeding.

Another one to think about is the process of induction. Although you will go through natural vaginal birth, forcing the delivery through induction would mean that you need to load up on those IV fluids. This causes so much water retention to you and your baby! And because of this, both your bodies aren’t prepared for breastfeeding.

Why Is Breastfeeding After A C-Section Challenging?

The instinct of a baby to suck or latch is disrupted because the baby is being taken away from the mom. Moms who undergo cesarean section can experience a delay in milk production.

Only 3.5% of babies are able to latch on to moms during the first hour compared to 71.5% of babies through vaginal birth.

It is important for moms to consider these statistics and information. Plan ahead and talk to your health care provider or OB-GYN. Know the best option and way to work around this.
