Something weird and funny just occurred to me while I was reading about the elections and the current issues that we have, and issues that we as a nation are trying to tackle. There is not enough noise about one basic human right that we should actually pay attention to because not only does it involve everyone, it also affects where we are headed in the future.
Every day a lot of women experience a dilemma: Should I keep on working to advance my career or start planning for a family?
To many countries in the world, this might be a very odd question. You might even be given an answer saying, “well, why not start a family and keep the status quo, maybe just take a few months off, it’s a right, right??” To almost every developed countries in the world, a maternity leave of at least 12 weeks is a right given to women, and it also extends to fathers — and this is paid and the way it is structured is that your job is secured.
This isn’t the case in the US where women are faced with this dilemma. Even then, new mommyz who choose to keep their jobs don’t have the proper avenues at work to nurture their children — like breastfeeding, pumping, and the like. In the end, babies are left with a nanny or a family member with formula in place of breast milk.
Shouldn’t we start a discussion about this?
